The opening day of the 2026 Diamond League Final in Brussels delivered a spectacular night of athletics, with African athletes taking centre stage across the track and field. From dominant distance-running displays to explosive sprinting and outstanding field-event performances, the continent produced several memorable moments as the world’s best gathered for the season finale.
Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi continued his remarkable dominance in the men’s 800m, storming to victory in a world-class 1:41.80 to claim his fourth consecutive Diamond League Final title. Djamel Sedjati finished second in 1:42.71, while Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu won the women’s 5000m in 14:35.20, leading an Ethiopian 1-2-3 with Likina Amebaw and Senayet Getachew. In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Faith Cherotich set a Meeting Record of 8:51.61, with compatriot Doris Lemngole following in a huge 8:52.86 PB. Winfred Yavi completed the podium in 8:53.54.
The sprints and field events provided even more African success. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme powered to second in the men’s 100m in 9.93s, while Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi finished third in 9.97s his 16th sub10s performance of the season and a historic first appearance by a Nigerian in the Diamond League 100m Final. Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi then produced one of the biggest performances of the night, winning the men’s 400m in 43.40s, a new national record. In the Women’s triple jump, Saly Sarr soared to 14.96m to claim the Diamond League title, becoming the first Senegalese athlete to win a Diamond League
And that was only Day One. With the remaining Diamond League titles still to be decided, the second day in Brussels promises even more drama, with several African stars still ready to take their shot at Diamond League glory. After such a strong opening day for the continent, there is plenty more to look forward to as the season finale continues. Africa has already made its mark and Day Two is still to come.
