Ghana’s Ibrahim Yakubu is enjoying a historic start to the 2026 indoor season, announcing himself as one of Africa’s premier sprint hurdlers with record breaking performances in the 60m hurdles.

At the Harvard Invitational, Yakubu delivered a statement series. He first broke a 35 year old Ghanaian national record with 7.76s, eclipsing the long standing 7.77s mark from 1990. He then raised the bar again clocking a blistering 7.71s personal best in the heats before matching that exact time in the final. In one meet, Yakubu lowered the national record twice and firmly stamped his authority on the indoor circuit.

That momentum built on his earlier 7.76s breakthrough at the West Point Invitational (Army-Gillis Field House), a performance that immediately placed him among the season’s top hurdlers.

Yakubu’s pedigree extends outdoors as well. He owns Ghana’s 110m hurdles national record (13.59s, 2021), confirming his status as the country’s leading sprint hurdler across both indoor and outdoor events.

His rise has been built on steady progression over more than a decade from 8.18s in 2013 to consistent sub 8.00 performances in recent years, including 7.84s in 2022 and multiple strong showings at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. He also holds Ghana’s 55m hurdles best (7.48s).

Now a regular on the international circuit, Yakubu has featured prominently on the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Tour and is positioning himself for major continental and global championships.

From patient development to record breaking precision, Ibrahim Yakubu’s surge marks a new chapter for Ghanaian hurdling and signals that Ghana has a genuine force on the global stage.
