Most athletes who you see giving their all on the field or pushing hard on the track didn’t get where they are without motivation and support from their parents. As seen over the years, athletics is often a family affair, with parents, grandparents and siblings frequently forming part of an athlete’s support group.
Big shout out to Mrs Brume for giving their children 110% in their sporting career.
This has indeed paid off as Ese Brume has risen from being a National athlete to becoming an Olympics finalist, World Championship Bronze medalist, Commonwealth Games Champion and multiple African Champion.
In fact, she is currently ranked 2nd on African All-time list in the women’s Long Jump with her Personal Best of 7.05m which she set in 2019 at The Turkish Championship, same competition she set her 100m Personal Best of 11.41s. Her 200m lifetime best is 23.97s.
At the just concluded National Sports Festival, Ese competed in the 100m, High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump as well as the 4x100m, winning 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.
Her Junior sister, Karo Brume who competes in the sprints as well, recently got an athletic scholarship to study Public Health at University of Texas, El Paso.
“My mom has been supportive with my sport, she encourage me to always stay focused. She made me understand that discipline, dedication, determination and with God I can achieve in sport. In challenging moments, she made me understand that challenges are gate to victories, never walk away from your challenges, face them and you will be glad you did, See more and talk less has also helped me going forward, these are my mum’s words. Financially, spiritual, materially she has been supportive. All thanks to her.”- Karo Brume
While their younger brother, Godson is currently one of the biggest sensation in the men’s 100m with a huge Personal Best of 10.27s which he set early this season. He was part of Team Delta’s 4x100m squad that clocked 39.87s to win Silver behind Team Edo.
In 2019, Godson won the National U18 title in the 100m, interestingly in the 2018, he finished 8th in the final.
That same year, Godson made his first National Senior final in the men’s 100m finishing 7th. This season he is ranked 4th on the National 100m ranking with his Personal Best of 10.27s
The youngster who was a Silver medalist at the National Sports Festival is currently on a training tour in the US with the Nigerian team as he hopes to give his best to help the nation qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in the 4x100m.
Their Mum turned a year older, yesterday and here’s Godson note to his mum.
“I feel so blessed to have you in my life. Happy birthday to you mom i want to express my deepest gratitude for your unconditional love and care towards me and my career. I have no better gift to give you today than “thank you Mom. My race today is my gift to you (10.30s).”
Speaking with Mrs Brume, she said the reason why she supports her children is because since she couldn’t reach international level, she wants her children to do so.
“My kids are blessings from God and my source of joy. Whatever I do they come first after God and for that I give them my maximum support. My reasons for giving them the support is that, seeing their interest in sport made me to encourage them since I was once an athlete but due to some reasons I could not get to international level but ended in national.
“My aspiration for my children is to see that they succeed and become the world best by the grace of God since I couldn’t do that.”
We want to encourage parents who still find it difficult to support their children in following their sport dream, it’s certainly going to worth it! Be like Mrs Brume, and who knows! Your child might also get to the podium on World stage.
