Olympian Prestina Ochonogor wasted no time making her mark in collegiate athletics, delivering a record breaking performance at the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The long jumper, who recently competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics, soared to an astonishing 6.64 meters in her debut meet for Tarleton State University, securing first place. Her leap not only crowned her WAC champion but also shattered multiple records, strengthening her status as an elite competitor on both the international and collegiate stages.
Ochonogor’s performance was nothing short of historic, setting new records in nearly every category. In just under two weeks since arriving from Nigeria, she rewrote the school record books, while also claiming the all time WAC record, meet record, and facility record. This explosive start notes her immense talent and ability to transition seamlessly from the global stage to the collegiate circuit. For a freshman to achieve such feats so early in her career speaks volumes about her potential and the impact she is set to make in NCAA athletics.
But this wasn’t her first big performance of the season. Earlier, at the Pre-NSF (SWAC) Athletics Meet in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Ochonogor launched herself to an impressive 6.85m (+0.1 m/s) in the long jump a massive personal best at the time. This remarkable leap fell just 1cm short of the World Championships standard (6.86m), a bittersweet moment that highlights just how close she is to competing on yet another global stage. Her versatility was also on display as she took part in the 100m, competing in the fastest heat of the event.
