Leendert Koekemoer continues to announce himself as one of the brightest young quarter-milers in the world after storming to a Personal Best and South African U20 National Record of 44.52s at the Grand Prix Brescia 2026 in Italy. The reigning World U20 bronze medalist produced a superb run to win the men’s 400m, finishing ahead of Jonas Phijffers in 44.61s and Reece Holder in 44.63s. Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori finished fifth in 44.79s, while Letsile Tebogo was eighth in 45.34s.
Koekemoer’s latest breakthrough adds another chapter to a remarkable rise that began at just 15 years old. In 2023, he won the South African U18 400m title in 46.38s before injuries disrupted much of his 2024 season. He returned strongly in 2025, breaking 46 seconds in his first U20 race before lowering his personal best to 45.03s in the semifinals of the South African Championships and breaking the longstanding South African junior record of 45.15s.
His development has also been highlighted on the international stage. Koekemoer was part of South Africa’s gold medal winning 4x400m relay team at the 2025 World Athletics Relays, where he ran a 44.23-second split as the team set a national record of 2:57.50. He later represented South Africa at the 2025 World Championships, earning a bronze medal in the men’s 4x400m relay, before helping the team to silver and another national record at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.
At the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships, Koekemoer further underlined his potential by winning bronze in the men’s 400m in 44.96s and adding a silver medal in the 4x400m relay. Now, with his new 44.52s mark, he has taken another major step forward. From a teenage U18 champion to a World U20 medallist and now the owner of a new South African U20 record, Koekemoer’s trajectory continues to point towards an exciting future in the 400m
